Up until recently, “me” time consisted of a few hours in the evening painting - which is where all of my past works came from - those late nights in the studio while my kids slept. One by one, I would paint my ideas into existence which quickly turned into a book full of sketches that mounted up quicker than I could paint... since 2020 I’ve release a single work at a time, but never a cohesive collection like this.
Over the past five years, I've been a stay-at-home mom to two rambunctious toddlers, and now that they are both in school full-time (POP THE CHAMPAGNE!!!) I have more time to paint, but I’ve come to a crossroads in my career. Do I pick up where I left off, teaching with a predictable schedule, or do I dedicate myself to painting and follow more of an entrepreneurial path. One provides predictability and security, the other almost certainly implies volatility and challenge - so why are so many of us bewildered by such a shift when the answer seems obvious?
Just how the tide shifts the direction of the sand by greater forces out of its control, this collection is named after the push and pull we all face when coming to a crossroads. Earlier this fall, Alyssa Rosenheck, author of The New Southern, writes: “Creativity is a new beginning - it’s about doing, being and becoming brave. It’s about having the courage to fail, to explore your truth and to grow into an expanded version of yourself it will take to create change.”
Maybe it's just this - I'm drawn to the challenge and the "what if?" because if not now, then when? This collection represents a new path and all the ups and downs that we take to get there, including the reminders we require to reach a higher goal or purpose. Each piece in this collection is named after the ebb and flow of decision making before, during, and after we take the leap and decide to shift directions.
